Newly hired personnel will be classified as a Fire Recruit during the Cosumnes Fire Academy and will be promoted to Firefighter at Step 1 upon graduation. Application Process
- Submit an application online.
- Must be current on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List (external link).
- Must be a California or National Registry Paramedic prior to a conditional offer of employment.
- Being enrolled in a paramedic training program will qualify you to apply, but being a California or National Registry Paramedic prior to a conditional offer of employment will be required.
- Complete an oral board interview, EMS skills assessment, and a final Chiefs' interview.
- Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, you must pass a background investigation, medical evaluation, and psychological evaluation.

Before applying to the Cosumnes Fire Department, all applicants must be current on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List.

Cosumnes CSD Information
FIRE ACADEMY
The Cosumnes Fire Department's state-accredited fire academy is located at our Fire Training Center in Elk Grove. Fire Recruits will be challenged physically, mentally, and academically, through rigorous training in firefighting techniques, rescue operations, hazardous materials, emergency medical training, and much more.
Upon successful completion of the academy, Recruits meet the current state firefighter standard and become probationary firefighters. Each probationary firefighter is assigned to a 48/96 shift schedule and will work under the direct supervision of a Fire Station Captain. Training will continue to be evaluated until one year of employment with the Fire Department (inclusive of the Fire Academy) and the probationary firefighter has successfully completed all final testing requirements.
