Burn Permits 

Burn Permits are issued under specific restricted conditions, and in certain rural areas of Elk Grove and Galt for property maintenance.

The annual permit allows the burning of grass, tree trimmings, brush, and weeds ONLY.

You can only burn on the property the Burn Permit is issued to. For further details, please reference the Burn Permit Guidelines (PDF).

Burn Permit Eligibility and Guidelines

Burn Permit Information

  • Burn permits are valid for one calendar year (January 1 to December 31).
  • All permit requests will be verified prior to issuance. 
  • Approved and paid burn permit applications will receive the burn permit via e-mail. 
  • Please allow 3 to 5 business days for processing.
  • The burn permit fee is $40.

Application and Payment Methods

  • Burn Permit online customer portal (permits are valid for one calendar year 1/1 to 12/31).

  • Customers will create an account and log in.
  • To access the Burn Permit application, choose the Fire Department button, then choose Burn Permit Application.
  • Complete application and pay fees.
  • Your application will be reviewed by the Fire Department to confirm property qualifies and fees are paid.  If approved, a Burn Permit will be issued and available in the customer portal.
  • Burn permits are non-refundable.  Please verify that you are eligible for a burn permit, by checking the  Burn Area Map (external), prior to purchasing.

Agricultural Burning

The Cosumnes CSD does not issue agricultural burn permits. Agricultural burning (PDF) requires a permit from the Sac Metro Air District (external). Please contact them for burn day status and additional information at 279-972-BURN (2876).
