The residents of Elk Grove will soon have a new recreation center for fitness, sports leagues, tournaments, and more.

Cosumnes Community Services District awarded the construction contract Wednesday evening for the CORE Recreation Center project.

The special district, which provides park and recreation services in Elk Grove, awarded S.J. Amoroso Construction Company a $29,354,000 contract to build a two-story, 54,000-square-foot facility within the 30-acre Morse Community Park

The bid summary reveals the plans and specifications were well prepared as indicated by the close differences in the construction bids received. The difference between the lowest four bids was only 1.4%. With seven total bids received – a competitive amount – the lowest bid provides an accurate reflection of the current market.

The work to be performed under the contract includes all labor, materials, equipment, transportation, and services necessary for the construction of the facility and site improvements, including grading, utility infrastructure, concrete flatwork, landscaping, lighting, irrigation, and furnishings.

Since 2019, the community has been engaged in the planning, design, and naming process with over 1,100 residents providing input and ideas at public meetings and through surveys.

CORE was selected for the new facility name after evaluating over 100 submitted names. It originated as an abbreviation of “Cosumnes Recreation” and embodies the goals of health, movement, wellness, and community.

CORE will include two gymnasiums, aerobic and multi-purpose rooms, indoor and outdoor fitness spaces, an indoor jogging track, and space for administration. The project also proposes an event lawn, new landscaping, lighting, and additional on-site parking.

“We are excited to move forward with construction and deliver on our promise to build this recreation center dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of our community,” said Cosumnes CSD General Manager, Joshua Green.

“We envision CORE to be a community hub in this growing and dynamic area of southern Elk Grove,” said Cosumnes CSD Board President Gil Albiani. “CORE will provide vital benefits to thousands of residents for many years to come.”

The project is expected to break ground by May 1, with estimated completion in late 2024.
